Katie Freeman: Owner; Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Welcome! My name is Katie Freeman (she/her), and I’m an LCSW and Registered Yoga Instructor (RYT-200). I obtained my BSW from Ohio University, spent a year in the Americorps in Florida working with individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and eventually found my home in Chicago after obtaining my MSW from Loyola University Chicago. I have worked in private practice for 10 years, both as a clinician and as a clinical supervisor. Having developed a strong desire to help more of the Chicagoland community through holistic health, I created Karuna Wellness in 2019. I specialize in treating trauma, and am a Certified EMDR Therapist and EMDR International Association Consultant-in-Training. In the last few years, I’ve also taken a special interest in the brain/gut connection (our “second brain”), after witnessing the ongoing detrimental effects of a lifetime of diet culture and restrictive/disordered eating on clients who displayed treatment-resistant mental health symptoms (and alternately, the value of undoing these mindsets and practices). I constantly strives to learn more about the vast effects of trauma on our nervous system, and focus my treatment on healing mind and body alike, through a combination of psychotherapy, gentle yoga, mindfulness, and meditation, when welcomed by a client.

Outside of the office, you can find me outside, cooking/baking new creations for my family and friends, petting dogs, or reading/listening podcasts about wellness.

While at the office, you may run into my sweet lazy Newfie, Ralphie. Ralphie loves joining me at work to get a couple pets, snuggle, and sleep the day away.
